This wire recorder was picked up at a very good price on eBay. The recorder appears to be from 1947 and is in excellent condition given its age. There are some paint chips but nothing too noticeable and there is no rust! This post will go through the process of recapping the unit and replacing any wires or resisters that are bad. So far all of the internals appear to be original.
To get the electrolytic caps out I had to remove the metal plate by taking out two screws on the side, there is also another screw that is hiding under the metal top plate. With that removed you can easily remove the plate that holds the transformer and electrolytic can.
plate that holds the transformer also holds the electrolytic can, its secured in place with three screws and the wires are solder at the exact length so those also need undone. The screw in the center of the image was the one that was hiding under the top plate These wires will need desoldered to fully remove the plate.
This post will continue to be updated as the restoration progresses.
